Next Generation News

Most neutrals like me had probably not heard of Neil Mellor until he scored a rocket of a goal in the last minute of Liverpool's 2-1 home Premiership victory. Before I knew it there were interviews with his dad, Ian Mellor, on Sky Sports News, at which point I realised he is the son of the former Manchester City star.

Both Ian and Neil are thus wecolmed to the site.

Ian signed from Wythenshaw Amateurs in December 1969, and made his League debut as a twenty year old in the 1970-71 season itself. He appears on the Manchester City page.

Neil now appears on the Sons and Daughters and Current Next Generation Player pages. This is Neil's third season, all on Liverpool's books, though last season he played all his first team football whilst on loan to West Ham United. He had made his Premiership debut on New Year's Day 2003 in a 1-0 away defeat to Newcastle United.

Up to this point, Neil had scored three goals for Liverpool in the League Cup (two earlier in the season in a 2-0 home victory against Middlesbrough), and a couple for West Ham United in Division One (now Championship), but this was his first Premiership goal in what was his first Premiership game that he has ever been in the starting line-up.

Sammy McIlroy (Man U apprentice) leaves Stockport County by mutual consent. Stockport are presently bottom of League One.

This is the first time Sammy has been reported as a Bob 70-71 Player. He signed professional forms in August 1971, but is listed in the Official history as an apprentice in the 70-71 season.

Yorkshire Evening Post claim that David Pleat (Peterborough United) was consulted in the process that led to Crystal Palace player, Shuan Derry, not signing for Leeds United after it had already been announced that he was signed, though all official sources deny this. David has not got a footballing post since leaving Spurs in the Summer.

24 November

Harry Redknapp, winner of the Premiership's manager of the month award in October has left Portsmouth. Harry insists it's his choice to go, but it does happen after the recent appointment of Velimir Zajec as executive director. On Monday (22 November 2004) there were news reports that he was going to buy Bournemouth. Speculation is also rife that he will manage Wolves. Jim Smith (Boston United) his assistant manager also leaves.

23 November

Sir Alex Ferguson manages his 1,000th match for Manchester United in his 18 year reign. The Champions League match, shown live on ITV1 was a 2-1 victory v Lyon, a win that takes the club through to the final knockout stage.

John Gorman (Celtic) steps up to caretaker-manager at Gillingham as Andy Hessenthaler steps down. Hessenthaler will stay on at the club as player.

22 November

George Best was featured on ITV1's cartoon satire, 2DTV again tonight. It featured George drinking at the 'Last Chance Bar', when he collapses. A Colina looking referee runs in and calls to a bench of substitute livers for one to come on. Not the Best of taste...

Email: Subject Charlie George

Hi,

I love your web site.  Too many of the others don't list players who were with Arsenal back in the seventies.  I am writing because I have been trying to find Charlie George's jersey number he used while at Arsenal.  Do you happen to know what number he used?

Thanks for the info,

Neal

It’s not that easy a question to answer because in the Seventies there was no such thing as squad numbers and only a few people were associated with the one number as they are now.Looking at the records Charlie mostly played in the 8, 9, 10 or 11 shirt, and even wore the 4, 6 and 7 shirts occasionally. As well as the number 12 substitute shirt! In the famous FA Cup final when Arsenal won the double and he scored he was the number 11.

Thanks very much to Peter Young, for sending a new Caught In Time of Blackpool. See Where are they now ?

This is the first time John Mcphee (Barnsley) and Bill Cartmell (Blackpool Chairman) have been listed on Bob's 70-71 Pages.

England play a 'friendly' away to Spain in Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid. England lose 1-0. Next Generation stars, Frank Lampard, son of Frank Lampard, played the first 60 minutes leaving the pitch at 1-0, and Michael Owen, son of Terry Owen (Bradford City), played the full match. Michael has scored 27 goals in 66 matches for England. Frank has scored 8 goals in 29 matches for England. The game was notable for being the home ground for both David Beckham and Michael. the game was marked by horrific racial abuse towards England players by a section of the Spanish crowd.

Tobias Lideroth, son of Anders Linderoth (Helsingborgs IF), plays for Sweden in a friendly away to Scotland. Sweden win 4-1, it is Tobias's 45th match for Sweden and he has scored for them once. Tobias enters the game in the 82nd minute when the scoring had been completed.

I (see) Keith Weller has finally lost his long battle against cancer this weekend. He was 58.

During the 1970-72 period Keith played for Chelsea (Dave Sexton bought him from Millwall for £100,000 I think) and although well-liked by the fans, he did not settle and was sold on to Leicester City, where he became a real club legend.

He was also a true 1970-71 eccentric. It's a shame that most people will remember him for being the guy that wore women's tights whilst playing (thick white ones), but they were simply a fore-runner of the current Lycra under-shorts that are so popular now.

I will always remember him for the best pair of sideburns at the Bridge since Ossie left the Club.

All the best

Hello Bob,

Good site. Some suggested additions. You'll gather that I follow Manchester United.

1.) Wilf McGuinness (Manchester United manager).

His son Paul McGuinness was also a player with Manchester United and is now the Manchester United Academy assistant manager:-

A good summary page for Wilf which also mentions Paul's involvement at MUFC is at:

http://www.manutd.com/news/fullstory.sps?iNewsid=25563&itype=466

"My son Paul McGuinness also works for United. He's in charge of all the schoolboy coaching and I'm very proud of him. He played here in two spells, firstly under Ron Atkinson as a junior pro, and then he came back after getting a degree in PE and sports science to be a pro under Alex Ferguson.

When things didn't go right for him football-wise, he started to work with Nobby Stiles and Brian Kidd, looking after the youngsters. He's been here 15 years now so he's had a great spell here as well."

Other links to Paul McGuinness are at:-

http://www.dallascup.com/home/64235.html

"Manchester United’s delegation leader and Assistant Academy Director Paul McGuinness is excited about returning to Dallas next year, this time with his Under 12 team."

http://www.nationaudio.com/News/DailyNation/11022004/Sports/Sports110220040.html

"A 25-man Manchester United under-15 side arrives in Nairobi at 8.30 am today for a seven day tour. The tour party, consisting of 18 players, four coaches and three officials is led by Paul McGuinness, the Manchester United Academy assistant manager."

2.) Martin Buchan. (Aberdeen)

Martin Buchan's brother George Buchan also played briefly for Manchester United.

For George see:http://www.mu-fc.net/b-79.html

ALSO Martin's son, Jamie Buchan, has played for Aberdeen, Dundee United and Partick Thistle and been on loan at Stockport County.

Martin Buchan Born in Aberdeen, Scotland on 6th March 1949, Martin Buchan was one of the coolest and classiest defenders of his day. He had a good sense of position and could turn a fast pace when necessary. Transferred to United from Aberdeen in March 1972 for a fee of £125,00. Voted "Scottish player of the year" in 1971 and capped 34 times for Scotland. Spent 11 years at Old Trafford, six as club captain. Appeared 455 times for United and scored 4 goals. 3.) Eric Cantona

Eric Cantona's brother Joel Cantona played for Ujpest Dozsa and briefly for Stockport County.
See:
http://www.prideofmanchester.co.uk/movies/EricCantona.htm

"In the Spring of 1995, during his lengthy ban from football, Eric returned to the Gers region in South West France, to fulfill a life-long ambition of acting. His brief appearance as Lionel, a two-timing, rugby-playing boyfriend of a girl whose father had quit the rat race and bought a duck farm received suprisingly rave reviews. The comedy film was called, appropriately, 'Le Bonheur est dans le Pre' (or 'Happiness In The Field' in America). It also starred Eric's brother Joel Cantona, who also played football (for Stockport County)."

Eric Cantona: from http://www.manchester2002-uk.com/sports/footballers1.html

Eric Cantona. Born in Paris, France on 24th May 1966. Cantona signed to United in 1992 for a transfer fee of £1.2 million, after an extensive career in various French teams since his debut as a 14 year old. A visionary attacker, his new blood and flair brought inspiration to his United team-mates. Quickly became a popular cult hero to fans, and voted "Player of the Year" in 1994. Cantona made 181 appearances for United and scored 80 goals. Reportedly planning to return soon to Old Trafford to coach the youth team.

5.) Peter Schmeichel

Peter Schmeichel's son Kasper Schmeichel, is a goalkeeper with Manchester City. See:
http://www.4thegame.com/playerprofile?personid=4558

"Kasper Schmeichel is the son of legendary Danish goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, best known for his performances in a Manchester United shirt, though he finished his career across the city with the Blue half of Manchester.Peter retired from the game in the summer of 2003, but their squad was not without a Schmeichel for long, as his son Kasper came through the ranks and established himself as a bright prospect for the future. In late November 2003, with David Seaman and Nicky Weaver both injured, Schmeichel made his first appearance on the bench supporting fellow young goalkeeper Kevin Stuhr-Ellegaard."

Just to let you know about some of the 'behind the scenes concerns... Bob

Email: Subject: Empics images

Hi Bob,

Hope you are well. It has come to my attention that some Empics copyright sport pictures are being used on your website. If you could contact me to discuss payment for the picture usage that would be much appreciated. If however you are not looking at paying for the images used, I would be grateful if you could remove them from the site immediately. Look forward to hearing from you soon

Kind Regards

EMPICS

I answered ...

It is only a homepage, I do not made money from the site, and hence cannot afford to make any payment for them. Which pictures do you refer to, so that I can remove them ?

There are various images used. The two Liverpool images on the obituaries page (Fagan and Saunders), and pics throughout the site of Trevor Francis, Tostao, Ray Crawford etc. Basically anything which has been taken from our site at low-res without us being aware of it. Look forward to your co-operation.

I promise you absolutely none of the images have been (deliberately) taken from the website, I wouldn’t do that, but they may well be your property, generally the pictures have been scanned from old comics. The obituary page ones have come from the BBC website, and the BBC have often written to me and never complained about it, I just presumed they were ok with it.

I’m very committed to removing the pictures you want me to, but I honestly don’t know which ones are yours so you would need to tell me.

Essentially, and I realise that this not a concern of yours, (I am concerned that) you are effectively bringing my website to a close, and it has had 6 years of my life invested in it so do have a heart.

I have tried to get pictures legitimately, but the cost is so high for a person for whom this is a hobby. Is there anyway I can use the pictures legitimately? I went onto your website last night and you have such incredible pictures and the only context is selling them which is very soulless and rather sad. Can I not show the picture and link through to you for anyone who wants to buy it? I get the picture you get the sale that sort of arrangement ?

I think if you spent more time examining the site you will realise that stealing the pictures is not what it’s about, my interest in the subject is genuine. The Trevor Francis picture one is from a ‘Football League Review’ in the 1970-71 season, it was not sneaked from your site. In fact I even have a link to you on my links page.

My sincere apoligies if removing the Empics images from your site results in it's closure, our picture researcher who noticed the site said how informative it is. The reason we insist on payment for any images used is twofold. Firstly we are a business and not a charity, and secondly whilst the website may be your hobby the pictures you have used are our photographers livelihood and after spending many thousands of pounds on equipment and travel to get the pictures they aren't very happy when the images are then used for free.

The two Liverpool pics on the obituaries page are ours and the Tostao one is in the World Teams section. The Ray Crawford/Trevor Francis ones are in the A-Z players list. I sincerely hope that your site can continue to function without these pictures and I wish it the best of luck in the future.

As you have left aside the issue of how I can do this legitimately, I presume the money involved would make this impossible. Shame about the Crawford / Francis pictures because they are both from the 70-71 season.

I do understand the explanation you offer re business and charity, but actually these arguments do not really hold for the pictures from over 30 years ago, I very much doubt the people who took them get a penny in royalties now, and didn’t benefit too much at the time either. I happen to know the likely photographer of the Trevor Francis picture because he contacted the website, and I severely doubt he would object to its use on my site, but heigh-ho.

One aside about the word ‘hobby’. If I had paid myself just the minimum wage for every hour I put into it, it would have cost me many thousands of pounds doing it, and judging by the number of hits and emails I get, it provides a real service for people. Sadly, I’m no businessman.

This said, the real reason I write in reply to your email is that I appreciate your apology, and ‘best of luck’ and ‘informative site’ comments.

One day's work eliminating images, I wrote...

I have, so far as I can tell, deleted all offending images from the various news pages on my site. I had not realised how many recent pictures I had accumulated that weren’t even necessary for the site, for which many apologies. I believed that the BBC were allowing me to have them, and did not relate them to being yours.

I’m less clear as to which 1970s pictures I will need to eliminate and will continue to follow your advice in this respect.

All the pictures you’ve highlighted should be gone now, and I’ll await advice re any more.
