'Great But Useless !'

'The top award goes to Bob Dunning for his site devoted to the 1970-71 season... All in all, it's a hotchpotch of completely worthless content, regularly updated by a devoted host. Spin your rattles in tribute to a truely great but useless site.' Ian Plenderleith

WSC When Saturday Comes June 2003 Issue 196, p.40.

Spot on Ian, thanks for the review, and thanks to Kåre B. for pointing it out to me. The quote above is in an article called 'god is in the detail' aiming to find the 'fascinating but spectacularly useless' in football websites. The fabulous Nigel Mercer's Galleries of English Football Cards 1965-75 came in number two.

P.S. An updated online version of this review appears at www.wsc.co.uk (accessed 25 March 2007)

The review now reads...

1. Bob and 1970-71 Footballers

The top award goes to Bob Dunning for his site devoted to the 1970-71 season. Why that season in particular? Well, why the hell not?

You can look at pictures of team squads in the days when they experimented with a curved single line (Aldershot) or a triangular overhead shot (renowned innovators Chester City). Find out that former England international Bob Langton was manager of Burscough FC that season. Or that ex-Huddersfield player Roy Ellam was last seen running the Nelson Inn in Thornton Lees.

All in all, it's a hotchpotch of completely worthless content, regularly updated by a devoted host. Spin your rattles in tribute to a truly great but useless site.

Hello Bob!

I've got a website where I gather info about past and present Arsenal players and managers. Now I was wondering if you would like to link to my site from yours. (I have now in several places - Bob)

My URL is
http://jkarlsson.netfirms.com

I have already linked to your site from my 70/71 page at
http://jkarlsson.netfirms.com/seasons/1970-71/

Cheers!
Johan

Johan's site looks great and I was delighted to be given a direct link to his 70-71 Season page. See Gunnermania - Profiles of past and present Arsenal players and managers; season by season statistics
