Hear any commentary involving Newcastle United and they will (guaranteed) mention how passionate Geordie support is. (Yawn !!) It is with a wry chuckle, then, that all the other supporters remind the Geordies that the last Newcastle United team to win a major trophy was Joe Harvey's excellent team which won the European Fairs Cup in 1968-69 - 10 of which players appear below.Newcastle United have the burden of a successful history which will not repeat itself - with 4 top League Championships (most recent 1926-27) and 6 F.A.Cup wins (most recent 1955). Harvey's team also won the Anglo-Italian Cup in 1972-73, and the Texaco Cup in 1974 and 1975, but his departure in 1975 ushered in a period where getting back into the top division has been the main struggle. Then along came Sir John Hall or more accurately, Sir John Hall's money, and since then things have been on the up with a Division One Championship (92-93), two Premiership runners-up (95-96, 96-97), two F.A.Cup runners-up (98, 99) and a return to European competition. Hence, Newcastle United are once again a force to be reckoned with and one of the front runners to come second in all competitions.Newcastle United were recently managed by Sir Bobby Robson, who was the last surviving manager to still be in a job from the teams in the 1970-71 World of Soccer Stars Album, at which time he was the manager of Ipswich Town. See most of these players in a team photo from July 1969 Note : The 1st number is the picture number. The team in bold italics is the team that player played most League games for, and 1980 =1980-81 season.
