The great thing about the early 1970s is that Man U were pretty crap. In 1950s and 60s there had been 5 League Championships and an F.A.Cup win, but following the 1968 European Cup win (from which there are 9 survivors here - see below) through to 1976, they didn't win a bean. As the great players left, the team got worse and in 1973-74 the unbelievable (now, not then) happened, and Man U were relegated ! Leeds United won the Championship that year, too, which must have been a double blow for them. They only stayed down a year, and haven't really looked so far back since. Hurrumph!

Denis made the goals record his own with his 25th goal on 2 April 1966 and took it up to 30 goals. Kenny Dalglish got his 30th goal on 14 November, 1984.

Denis scored 40 FA Cup goals which is a previous competition record - beaten in 1996 by Ian Rush.

Tony's only appearance in the 70-71 season was his first for Man U's first team. He came on as a substitute for Tony Dunne in the 4-0 away defeat against Ipswich Town. Incidentally, this substituton went unnoticed in the 1971-72 Rothmans Football Yearbook.

As far as I can tell Manchester United had no transfer activity in the 1970-71 season, until 10 May, 1971, when Nobby Stiles moved to Middlesbrough for 20,000 pounds, but this was too late to play a match for his new club.
