October 2000

Andrew Vause has written a couple of times. Andrew has informed me of of one further Next Generation star - Neil Clement of West Brom, son of Dave Clement (QPR) who sadly died in 1982.

Andrew also became the first person to EVER write an answer to the quiz. It's only been there for two months, so I can see no-one's in a hurry. I should have the next quiz up by the time you're reading this, so here's Andrew's answers -

1.Peter " the brothel creeper" Storey

2. Gordon Banks

3. Alan Gowling

4.Panathiniakos won on away goals

5.Fith round ( flaming Ray Crawford !!!!!)

6.First England v Malta game ( I seem to remember we even won!)

7. Bob Stokoe ( I dont know which club he came from but I certainly remember the sod later!)

8.Big Mal ( yet another coach to haunt us in the cup in the seventies)

9. Ibrox

10.The facts and figures for the match seem correct, however wasn't the league cup final played on a Saturday in the seventies.

Excellent ! Well done Andrew 100 per cent for the 9 you answered ! No.7 Bob Stokoe came from Carlisle.

Paul Graves wanted to ask me his quiz questions...

I am doing a football quiz and have two very tricky questions which I hope that you might be able to answer as I have browsed your excellent website and you have info on the things that I need.
The 1st question is: How many clean sheets did Peter Shilton keep for England? And the 2nd: Which player was on the cover of the first edition of Shoot! magazine? I would be extremely grateful if you knew the answer to any of these questions.

Paul Graves

Well
Bobby Moore was featured on the first ever cover for Shoot! magazine.

As it happens I now know Peter Shilton kept 66 clean sheets for England - 31 more than his nearest rival Gordon Banks.

Jim Ross has sent me loads and loads of interesting stuff which I have been slowly making available on these pages, thanks VERY much for that Jim. Amongst Jim's Gems were a couple of adverts for football boots. Jim writes :

Check out the boots on Denis Law. Denis had a contract to wear Mitre boots, but he hated Mitres, so Mitre let him wear Adidas as long as nobody could tell the were NOT Mitre.

See this advert and a brochure of Gola boots at the new 70-71 related page
Football Boots !

Jim also sent a picture of the June 1970 edition of 'Charles Buchan's Football Monthly' and the 1970-71 'Topical Times' annual. Click to see these and some further editions.

Joanne Hill wrote asking :

We have a question in our office which no-one answer, and we wondered if you could.  In his England career, Peter Shilton saved one penalty - taken by who?   We would appreciate if you could let us know before 4pm today whether or not you know the answer, and thank you greatly in anticipation.   Joanne Hill

Well, I could ... Shilton saved a penalty taken by Brehme of West Germany on the 12th of June 1985. England won 3-0.

I would like to take full credit for this fabulous bit of inspired knowledge ... but in actual fact I lifted the information directly from
England question & answers. I guess the question is doing the office rounds at the moment.

John Foley : succinctly commented :

Bob,
Saints' current record home attendance is 31,044!   John Foley

(See Southampton)

Well, this site isn't actually interested in the current record - but the record in 1970-71 season (obviously) as printed in the World of Soccer Stars album. Just as I was about to tell John this, I went to the trouble of looking it up in the Rothmans Football Yearbook. And John is right, this IS the current record, but it was set in 1969 - which means that the World of Soccer Stars had not updated their records. The total was achieved versus Manchester United in (the old) Division One 8 October, 1969.

I wrote back to John pointing out that the increased total was still rubbish anyway to which he replied (quite rightly, again) ...

...but it's quality, not quantity, that counts, eh?! (Like our seasonal points tallies!)

Cheers John.

Helen Jerome wrote to point out the further reletives of

Tony Currie - Sheff Utd etc flamboyant 70s star

nephew: Darren Currie - Barnet ace winger today

Cousins:

Steve Bull
Gary Bull - ex-Barnet

Brothers:

Glenn Hoddle
Carl Hoddle ex-Barnet

For which many thanks. Tony and Darren Currie are already on the site and Darren often has updates in the Next Generation news. The Bulls and Hoddles don't qualify for Bob's 70-71 pages as far as I'm aware - but again, many thanks for getting in touch with the information.
