April 2003

Just to give you an idea of how far behind I am with this regular feature, these emails date from late January ... but all new emails I receive are usually answered within the week so it would be great to hear from you.

Dear Bob

An interesting article in the Sunday Times 26th January 2003 referred to Pat Dunne being the brother of Tony Dunne ex
Manchester United and Eire footballer.

Who did Pat play for in the early sixties? Where is he now?

I hope you can assist and thank you for your help.

Yours sincerely

Ken Ainge

Yes, I was aware of him. His name appears on Sons and Daughters at the Brother's section of the page, and in 1970-71 season was at Plymouth Argyle, (Click to see the Plymouth Argyle page, which I have added to the site in response to Ken's email, but unfortunately he is not in the picture).

He was a goalkeeper that played 5 times for Ireland, and was on the books of Everton from 1960-to 1964, when he joined his brother, Tony at Man U. He played 45 games for them in the next two season, before moving on to Plymouth Argyle in 1967. The 70-71 season was his last in English League football, having played 152 League games for Plymouth.

Ken later sent to me the article he reffers to, and can now be read at Caught In Time

Hello Bob,

Hope everything is well. I have been keeping up with your very informative and interesting site. (Thanks -Bob) I am writing to you fairly late in the evening, so apologies if my suggestion is either already on the site or is incorrect; I think that
Ken Wagstaff (Hull) and David Wagstaff (Man City, Wolves and Blackburn) were also brothers.

I am not 100 % sure, but I do remember something about them when I was a Kid, they were similar looking, both had an extremely powerful shot and were both born around the Manchester area, perhaps just coicidence?

Also there was a player called Barry Wagstaff around at the same sort of time, don't know if he was related or not. Keep up the good work.
Regards
Andrew Vause
.

Good to hear from you again, Andrew. Well I've looked up as best I can. It seems you have spotted some Wagstaff brothers, but different ones to the ones you query.
Barry Wagstaff (Reading) was brother to Tony Wagstaff. Both Barry and Ken, played for Sheffield United and Reading, Barry later moved on to play for Rotherham United, as well.
But, David and Ken are not only not brothers, but actually have different surnames, because David's is spelt Wagstaffe (with an 'e').

Hi Bob, I have some football pictures that were put out by Typhoo Tea. I believe they are team pictures of the first division from the fifties. Is there any information you could give me on these cards?

Thanks, Tony Wills, Canada.

Well the pictures are more likely from the early Sixties than Fifties. People got them by collecting tokens and sending off for them from packets of tea. In good condition they are quite collectable, too. The best site to see similar examples isNigel Mercer's site at http://cards.littleoak.com.au/l.

Dear Mr Dunning,

On March 8th one of our co-workers will be 50. Of course we have planned something for that day. Instead of an Abraham, we want to dress up a puppet like a fireman in a Feyenoord kit, that is, a top or something as he appears to be a great Feyenoord supporter.

We did not know this and we think it is quite funny, as in this region we thought one would only find Vitesse-fans. My question therefore is: do you happen to have a shirt and a cap (can be a second hand) to dress up this puppet ?

We thank you in advance for the efforts and I eagerly wait your answer.

Kind regards, Anneke Holweg

The wonders of being a webmaster is getting bizarre requests such as this, which, even better, arrived in Dutch. Huge thanks to Jelle Vanhijfte for the translation. Though I don't have a supply of old Feyenoord football shits to hand, reproduction 70s football shirts are available at TOFFS

Have only just discovered your terrific site and as I delve into it , it certaily helps me with my record updating on ex league players which I am attempting to overhaul and aim to produce a book on 'where are they now?'.

Incidentally Alan Taylor's paying career did not end at Norwich he spent 2 seasons as far as I know at Thetford town scoring 15 goals in  37 games in 1989/90 the following season he played 36 games but am unsure how many goals he scored.

Hope that piece of info helps your records if I find out more as I go along I will let you know.

Thanks

Dave Wright

Good luck with the book, I very much look forward to seeing it . See Alan Taylor
