At last
... the return of the email page. Long established as my
favourite page on the whole site, it just takes forever
to compile, so appologies for all the missed emails since
May, ultimately I do hope to catch them up. But just to
start afresh here's the emails that I've received this
month - Bob
Hi Bob,
I love your 70-71 site. Like many boys aged
around 10, TV fascination with the 1970 World Cup
suddenly turned what had been an interest into a
passion.
After that, there was no stone left unturned in the
search for footie 'stuff', whether it was 'Shoot'
posters (as a parent now, I can't imagine why my Mum
and Dad agreed to let me paper my entire wall with
torn pictures), sticker albums (which always seemed
to me to be too flimsy and a little too flash and
'foreign'), or the real thing, the bubblegum
cards.
That was their name, right ? Who knew they were
actually made by someone ? As far as we were
concerned these were the only thing worth spending
hard-earned pennies on, the nasty pink stick of gum
immediately rejected in the rush to see whether that
elusive Charlie George was there.
But no, more Burnley, always more Burnley, with
Ipswich a close second. Did they actually print
six times more Ian Collard cards than anyone else, or
was I just the lucky one ?
I always wondered whether there was some regional
bias going on - supply players where they were least
wanted to keep the kids buying. I had a clear
picture in my mind that in Burnley all the kids were
wandering around sadly with more Eddie Kellys than
they could ever use and not one single Dave
Merrington.
So it was back to school the next day, a pile of
rejects and repeats in your grubby fist, desperate
for playtime and the chance to win. Serious
stuff. Flicking the cards against the playground
wall. All the infants were unceremoniously
hounded away to clear the space. The card held
daintily between index and middle finger, then
lauched with the delicacy of a Jockie Wilson, to
lodge snugly just under the fence.
Unbeatable.
No-one else could get as close. Your prize all
the cards thrown - bugger, more bloody Ian
Collards. If I met him today, I wonder what I'd
say ?
What about the stuff written on the backs of the
cards, all the exciting personal information ?
Is that any use ? I know you're a confirmed
70/71 man, and actually that year's cards did contain
some entertainment with the mysterious 'rub here with
the edge of a coin' answers to reasonable questions
(e.g. the back of Bobby Moore "Fact or Fiction :
Denis Law scored six goals in a Cup tie and was on
the losing side" - even with the invisible
answer long since decayed by age, we know that one,
right ?).
But the next season's set, of which I have criminally
too few, featured the most pointless and laughable
'facts' under the usual pen picture.
Some gems :
Barry Lyons - Notts Forest - "Did you know
? Barry is one of the Forest
favorites" Wow ! Now I feel I know so much
more about him. So they don't hate his guts,
then ?
Malcolm MacDonald - Newcastle - "Did you know ?
Malcom cost 180,000 from Luton" Well, the
fact that it says exactly that an inch above in the
description kind of gave it away, yes.
Bill Glazier - Coventry - "Did you know ?
Bill is the Glazier from the Palace" Ok, I
see where you were going with that one, but what
exactly does it mean ?
Jimmy Husband - Everton - "Did you know ?
Jimmy is Everton's speedy winger" Ah, now
considering that his position, as noted on the front
of the card is Outside Right, then I'm guessing I did
have an inkling, yes.
John Aston - Man Utd - "Did you know ?
John is a speedy Manchester winger"
Wait a minute......
Cyril Knowles - Spurs - "Did you know ?
Cyril is the Spurs hard-tackling
full-back" Hmmm, so when you called him an
Inside Right on the front, you meant....???
Too easy to scoff, of course. Especially when
you're a (self-proclaimed) cool 11 year old.
Keep up the great
work.
Paul McClean
I don't have an email of the
month prize, but if I had this would have been it ! In
fact this is a knitting together of a couple of email,
thanks very much Paul. It's got me going back tomy old
71-72 series to spot the naff facts. See A&BC 1970-71 Bubble Gum Cards
NB: See more by Paul McClean on
A&BC player information, at November

Do
you know the keeper for Leeds United in the 60's? Thanks, Nina Motherway
Well
avoiding the obvious answer of 'maybe', every Leeds
United goalkeeper that appeared in a Sixties League match
includes ...
Ted Burgin
Roy Wood
Alan Humphreys
Terry Carling
Tommy Younger
Gary Sprake
Brian Williamson
David Harvey (Leeds United squad)
I
enjoy your web site BOBS 1970-71 footballers
(thanks ! - Bob). This was the season I first
attended football, and Hearts have always been my
team.
I
have enclosed a picture of Hearts, taken in September
1970 against Airdrie. This was in fact only the
second live football match I ever attended and
although only being seven years old, I still recall
this actual picture being taken at the time.
I
hope you can include it on your web page.
John
Begg
Sadly
John, I couldn't open the picture as sent. Which is a
shame, as I would very much like to include it on the
site if you can re-send it as a Jpeg file. However,
coming to the rescue ...
I have
attached Hearts team groups all from season 1970-71,
I would be delighted if you could include them in
your web-site. It was a relatively succesfull season
for the club when they reached the first ever Texaco
Cup final. Although they beat Wolves in the second
leg of the final , a 3-1 defeat in the first leg at
Tynecastle cost them victory.
I also have
great affection for this group of players as 1970-71
was the first season I attended Tynecastle park as a
supporter of this wonderful club.
Sharon
Thomson
Thanks to John and
Sharon, there is now a page devoted to Hearts. If you wants your team added,
or any player, then just send me a picture and I'll do my
best.
1) Was
a guy called Dennis Walker the 1st black player for
Man Utd.?
2)On
the official tour of United's they say Nikola
Jovanovic was the first foreigner for them, but I say
Carlo Sartori was. Could you let me know ? Thanks.
Neil
1) Possibly. I
don't know, anyone know ?
2) Carlo Sartori was born in Italy, but had lived in
England from a young age and had not been capped by a
foreign side, which I imagine is why Jovanovicis
considered the first foriegn player.
He could barely speak English and was a capped Yugoslavia
international. I wouldn't mind betting Sartori even had
an English passport, he could certainly have qualified as
an English player by modern rules - but for the fact he
was useless ! (OK he was better than me.)
Hi Bob
I noticed a while ago that you reproduced a piece I
did on Peter Eustace (in 'Hammers News'. You
obviously keep your Click to see) eye out for stuff in
club publications.
You might then be interested to have a look at the
next edition of Hammers News, in which we feature
Graham Paddon. Obviously, his time at West Ham came
after 70/71, but he made his name at Norwich between
1969 and 1973. Should be out next Friday.
Cheers, Neale Harvey.
PS: Fascinating site.
Thanks for that
Neale, 'The Hammers News' is a favourite in this house
already, and I would recommend it anyway, the Graham
Paddon (Norwich
City squad) article is a bonus !
Hi Bob
Do you know of anywhere I could find a full account
of what happened in Gordon Banks's car crash?
I couldn't help
here, anyone know ?
Can you
tell me if I can contact any of these players, or if
you can tell me what they are doing now days: Bob Wilson ,
Frank McLintock, Pat Rice, Peter Simpson, John
Roberts, Sammy Nelson, George
Armstrong, Peter Storey, George Graham,
Eddie Kelly, Charlie George, Jon Sammels, Peter
Marinello, Ray Kennedy, John Radford.
Peter Miller
Well as I write many times every
month (see FAQ), I have no connection with the players
themselves and do not know how to contact anybody on the
site. As for where they are now, see Arsenal - in fact most of those asked can be
found at whereare they now ?
Peter wrote back and asked me
which pub Eddie Kelly owns, anyone know ?
I am trying to trace
whoever presently holds the copyright to a magazine
called 'Charles Buchan's Football Monthly' which was
published by Longacre Press, 161 Fleet Street, London
in November 1966. Do you know this? If
so, could you supply me with the best address to
contact them with regard to the London
publication?
I look forward to hearing from you about this.
Andrew
I'm not sure. The magazine
became 'Football Monthly' for a while before folding in
the late 70s. Someone else asked this question and sent
me the answer, but a full search of the computer cannot
find her answer - sorry ! Does anyone else know who hold
the rights now ?
Dear Sir,
I have been searching the internet looking for
testimonial results from the 1970's when I found your
web site, which I found very interesting and
informative it has brought back a lot of memories.
Do you know the results of Bobby Moore's and Geoff
Hurst's testimonial matches played on the 16/11/70and
23/11/71. I have a total of 23 other matches from the
70's I cannot find any where. I have contacted the
clubs without success.
Any other advice you could provide would be very
welcome
Yours faithfully
Neil Taylor
I can imagine these
games would be difficult ones to get the scores from. I
have to admit I don't have any source for finding the
results and I don't have the results for those particular
games. I wonder if they would be reported in the club
programmes succeeding the games.
Does anyone else know
???
Hi there,
I am trying to find out if there was a player for
Leeds United named David Robson, apparantly he
eventually went to Hull City through not turning up
on time in training due to a tradgic accident with
his grandfather..this would be around 1980 to 83
time.
My
son was told about this player, and is trying to find
out info on him etc.
Can you please let us know if there were such a man
and where my son can find details on him?
Your
help is appreceated.
Mrs McMillan
Getting information on
players that did not make a full appearance for the first
team is extremely difficult, and I don't know of anyone
who makes this information available. The best bet is
really to go through Leeds United or Hull City football
programmes or maybe the Yorkshire Post/Evening Post
copies of the era, but that would be a needle in a
haystack.
Maybe someone else
will remember him or even know him, but I'm afraid I
cannot help there. It may be worth writing to Leeds
United or Hull City, but English football clubs are
useless at writing back, I never get replies even when I
include a stamp !
Anyone know any better
- I'll pass the information on.
A couple of England
questions have been answered been answered here by Peter
Young from www.englandfootballonline.com
How many
international goals have England scored?
Will Roberts
England's record, as of today (25 / 10 / 2002), in
matches the F.A. deems official:
Matches Played 797
Wins 446
Draws 197
Losses 154
Goal For 1795
Goals Against 816
Goal Difference 979
Winning percentage 68.6
Win/Loss Margin +292
This record does not include the
1995 match against the Republic of Ireland abandoned in
the first half because of fan violence with the Republic
leading 1-0. The F.A. awarded caps for this match, but
because of the abandonment no official result was
reached. It does include the 1953 match against Argentina
abandoned in the first half because of torrential rain
with neither team having scored. The football
associations of both countries agreed to let the match
stand as a scoreless draw.
These records and many others may be found on England
Football Online www.englandfootballonline.com
Peter.
Hi,
I've been
trying to find out about a match I saw at Wembley
when I was a kid. It was to comemorate the UK joining
the Common Market. The three countries joining
(Norway, Ireland and the UK) versus the six already
in. I think Bobby Charlton, Pat Jennings and Franz
Becnwhatsit played. Do you know anything about it or
can you point me to someone who does?
Thanks!
Trevor Neil
My website, England Football
Online, has a page devoted to England players honoured by
selection to international representative teams.
The details of this match and others are arranged in
chronological order at

The official Wembley website, which has details of every
match ever played there--and I mean "every

internationals as well as F.A. Cup, League Cup and senior
international matches.
The site has a search engine, which means you can find
out how many times any player or any club
appeared at Wembley and the details of their
appearances. It's one of the best football
resources on the web.

Peter
Thanks for that Peter - there's loads more information
including a fascinating Questions and Answers section at www.englandfootballonline.com
Hello Bob,
Just a quick question to prevent the start of world
war 3. Can you please confirm for me in which year
did Ivor Allchurch win sportsman of the year?
Many thanks
Michael
Barroccu
Well, I don't know
which 'Sportsman of the Year' he is supposed to have
won. He didn't win the BBC one or the Sports
Illustrated one. And he wasn't the Football Writers'
Footballers of the Year or a European Footballer of
the Year, and that's all I can think of. Anyone else
throw more light on this ?
When did Kevin
Keegan
retire ?
Lauren McParland
Kevin's last playing season was
1983-84. He played almost every match of that seaon for
Newcastle United, including the last game v Brighton and
Hove Albion. It was a 3-1 home win and Kev scored.
The date of that last match was 12 May 1984.
Kev went out on a high as
Newcastle's leading goalscorer 27 goals in 41 League
games. The club came third and were promoted to Divsion
One (when it was the top division, of course.)
Hi Bob, I
am a Man Utd fan (but more
importantly I love football). I used to know Alex
Dawson in the early Sixties and at the back of my
mind I believe that he played for West Ham. If you
could email me with any info. I would be grateful.
David J.
Alex went from Man U to
Preston North End, Bury, and Brighton &Hove Albion.
He also had a loan spell at Brentford. If he did go to
West Ham he didn't play a League match. In fact, his last
season was the 70-71 season. So I have now added him to
the site at Brighton. I don't have any record of
what he did after football, so if anyone else does, let
me know.
