Lauren Stephens Associate Producer (oo-er) requests

I wonder if you can help me.  I am writing from Chrysalis Television where we are currently working on a world cup show entitled "Top Ten Football songs" and obviously Arsenal feature prominently in our chart.  I am trying to find out as much information as possible about the following songs:

Good Old Arsenal - 1971
Shouting for the Gunners - 1993
Hot Stuff - 1998

I need to know everything about the songs how they were made, who starred in them and any funny stories related to them.  If you could help me at all I would be most grateful.

Hmm that's sounds like a programme I'll be recording I love (particularly naff) football songs Sadly, though, I don't have any background knowledge of them, much as I wish
I did.

http://www.cherryred.co.uk/football/arsenal.htm is the CD that actually features the three tracks.

Shame he didn't offer me a researchers fee ... I would have tried to find out more ! If, however you know anything I'll pass it on.

Eddie asks

Who scored the goals in the FA Cup tie Q.P.R.. v South Shields in January 1970.
the score was 4-1 to Q.P.R.
                  yours in sport
                        aeddie

The scorers were:
QPR : Marsh 2, Clarke, Ferguson
  South Shields: Smith (pen)

Must have been a big day for South Shields, QPR were a great team at that time. QPR had 6 players who were capped for England either before or after that game !!

Steve has this query

Hi Bob,

Settle an argument pal.

Is Paul Reaney of black parentage ?

No. Albert Johanneson is referred to as being the first black player in an FA Cup final. Well Paul Reaney was in the same team. Also Viv Anderson was England's first capped player to be black even though Paul Reaney was capped in 1969.

Joey Swift passes on this information

Dear Bob, in the 60s Chester City earned a record for having 5 forwards who all scored 20 goals in a season Gary Talbot 20, Micky Metcalfe 20, Hughie Ryden 20 Jimmy Humes 20 and Elfed Morris 20 does this record still stand?
thanks Joey Swift

I didn't know about it until you told be, but the incidences of a club scoring 100 goals in a year are pretty rare, and I'm sure no-one else has done it. I'll research it further, but you can be safe that no-one has matched it since. Amazing.

Burak Kocer has this academic request

Dear Bob: how can I find the Rothmans Football Yearbooks for the years 1990-1991, 1991-1992, ..., 1995-1996? I am doing a research on the transfer fees of professional  football players in English Division 1. I believe the most reliable data is available in the Rothmans Yearbook. Do you have any other suggestions? For example, can I get the data online?

Well as a simple answer to your question Rothmans are available to buy at http://www.abebooks.com/
(Type 'Rothmans' into the search engine 'keywords' to see the books that are available).
I've just done this now and all of them are available.

The books do have the information available.Getting all five won't be a cheap option - but they are great books !!!
As for the availability of the information on-line, I've not come across it myself, that's not to say it isn't there. Football statistics prior to the recent 90s is hard to come by.

Andy Pugh asked simply enough

Bob, Can you help ??? Who, at the age of 50, was the oldest referee to officiate an F A Cup Final ?? I believe it was in the 1990's.

I'm sorry, I don't have a clue - wrong decade for me !

Carl Sartori writes

Is Carlo Sartori still an active player for Manchester?
Can I get in touch with him?
Is there a way to tract his statistics?

Based upon my name, you can sense my interest in him...

I can indeed Carl, for a second I thought I had a mail from the great man himself there !!!

There was a site which had a great page devoted to him, but that's gone now. That said you should go to Manchester United's own official site if you  haven't already, that lists every game he ever played and the tream he  played in.

See
http://www.manutd.com/

The site is very busy as I write so I'm having difficulty accessing the  information I need , but enter the site, choose the 'Team' option then  choose 'Player search'. Search for Sartori in the bottom box. Click on his  name.

On the left of the screen you'll see the 'full list' option. Choose different seasons to see all the games he played.

He's not at Man U anymore, and I haven't a clue how to contact him, I'm  afraid. If you do catch up with him say hello from me and tell him to drop a  line to me !!!

Carlo is an incredibly popular player on my site - but mostly for ironic  reasons. I mean ... well he  wasn't very good ! Better than me, but not a part of Man U's glittering past, I'm afraid.

There's a picture of him on my site at

John Barnes writes

Nobby Stiles is doing an after dinner speech at my football club and I require a picture for the menu are you able to accomodate me with one ? Thanks J.Barnes

Jim Howe on the subject of Nobby wrote

Saw your web page about Nobby Stiles. Can you settle an office argument.

Why is Nobby Stiles called Nobby?

It must be a nickname for something. Is it Bobby or Robert?

Please help if you can. Thanks

Jim Howe

Now this one I know without having to look it up for once,

Nobby's real name was Norbert, hence 'Nobby'

Charles wrote

Hello, My name is Charles and I was trying to find out some information on a certain player that played for Leeds United alotime ago with the last name Scott.

Well there was a Billy Scott played for Leeds when they were called Leeds City between 1912-1914 and more recently John Scott played for Leeds United  from 1950-56.

Andy Button wrote to me with information he had and then asked:

Can you help me? I am trying to trace DANNY HEGAN and MICK HILL who both played for IPSWICH late 60s early 70s. Both heroes of childhood especially DANNY who lived in the next road to me. I am trying to compile a whos who of IPSWICH and these two have eluded me. Can you include address so i can send some pictures

Well I don't know the answer (see FAQ), but if you do and can tell me, I'll arrange for it to be passed on to Andy.

Ray Willis asks

Who is Englands greatest goalscorer (games to goal ratio)?

Please reply to Ray WILLIS

All time I reckon it must be G.H Camsell, who scored 18 goals in 9 games, but I have to admit I don't have a list of this. Try:
http://www.x-pointcgi.com/cgi-bin/users/158/wwwboard/wwwboard.html this might come up with someone else.

Anthony Clews asks

Thanks for your great site. I would like to know whatever happend to the Birmingham defender Roger Hynde? He use to have me in stitches as he spent more time on his beHynde than on his feet, especially against the likes of Rodney Marsh. Can you help?

ANTHONY CLEWS

Hoho - actually, I don't, does anyone know the whereabouts of Roger Hynde ?

Shaun Fagan has a good question

Hi Bob,

Wonder if you can help me?
Trying to find out more about the Bremner statue and its creator Frances Siegelman - have you any relevant info?

Cheers

Shaun
ps great website btw!

Thanks for the praise of the site

I presume that you've already seen the pictures on the site of the statue itself at
http://ds.dial.pipex.com/bob.dunning/billys.htm .

The Leeds site did mention their site talking to the Frances Siegelman, so maybe there is something more there, but I'm afraid I have no more information at all, I'm sorry. See
http://www.lufc.com/99_00/news/990806c.shtml

If anyone digs up any information that I can link on my site to help any other searchers send them to me and I'll credit you with finding them.

Carol wrote:

Hello Bob   Do you have any record of a Colin Wootton Goalkeeper for Crystal Palace Youth team in 1970ish.   Regards Carol

Getting youth team information is very tricky so I passed it on to Crystal Palace expert
Tony Bowden
, who writes

Hi Bob,
Yes I have heard of Colin Wootton, he was a Palace junior 1970-72. He played 20 minutes of a friendly match against Paykaan on Aug 5th 1970 which should be with the details I sent you. He did not play for the first team or the reserves and youth team games were not well reported those days, although he did play in 4 youth cup games 71-72 , and he played in a London youth cup final against Chelsea 70-71 in which the trophy was shared each side winning 1-0. Hope this is some help.
                                                    Regards
                                                             Tony

Carol replied

Thank you very much for coming back to me on this.   Colin says that the same season we shared the trophy we also won the South Eastern counties league as it was known at that time.
He played with Jimmy Cannon we who went on to play for Crystal Palace first time and Terry Austin who went on to play for Ipswich.

He also says in the last game of the season when they won the league they had to beat West Ham by more than 7 goals and he thinks they won 12-0.
Colin also says he is sure he was the youngest goalkeeper ever to play for a Crystal Palace first team as he was just under 17 at the time, perhaps you can confirm this.

I don't have sufficient records to check about the final point, but I've added Colin's name to the Crystal Palace page. Thanks very much for getting in touch.
