Jimbo writes on the subject of Reg Jenkins (Rochdale)

AKA The King of Spotland. (Or San Spotlando as it's known these days) Still Rochdales record goalscorer to this day. He played for all 3 Devon Clubs & then many seasons for the Dale. He also had a quiff that looked like the tide coming in. He is now retired in Plymouth I believe; any info gratefully accepted.   TTFN   Jimbo.

Yes, Reg is Rochdales's record goalscorer having scorerd 119 League goals between 1964 and 1973. Soccer-Files.com - Reg Jenkins shows his career record, and I've added him to the 70-71 pages, but if anyone has a picture or anything I'll gladly add it to the site.

Hi Bob,   I am trying to get my hands on any pre 1970 topical times books or anything connected to topical times and i was hoping you would be the man who would know where i could get them or who to speak to.   I would be very grateful if you could help as I am a keen collector of topical times books and Clyde F.C programmes and memorabilia.    Many Thanks   Richard Harrison

My advice as always to Richard is to look at the Auction sites. See Links: Commercial, Particularly useful for the Topical Times books is the fabulous site abebooks.com - the world's largest source of out-of-print books!, which takes out all the lottery of an Auction, but can be more expensive.

Hello Bob,
maybe you can help me with the following?
What is the the name of a former spurs player who was named "the ledge"?
I know
Pat Jennings and Willie Young later went on to play for Arsenal, but who is the 3rd one who did?
And when was it that Arsenal got the name "boring arsenal"?
Hope you can help me as fast as you can.
Thank you.Regards Bjorn

Hi Bjorn,
the third ex-Spurs player in that Arsenal team was Steve Walford who actually only played a couple of times for Spurs.
The 'Boring , boring Arsenal' grew out of the previous insulting song 'Lucky lucky Arsenal'.   It was during the period of time that George Graham was manager for them. When they won the Championship the second time under him (90-91), they were increadibly consistant losing just once in the 38 game season, and had 24 clean sheets. Graham succeeded in perfecting the defensive game such that they killed matches dead once they had the lead. In many ways it was a compliment that the only thing the opposition fans could think of to get their own back was to call them 'boring'. The Arsenal players used to sing it  sarcastically to the manager after each match when they had come in from another great result !
The defence of Seaman, Bould, Dixon and Winterburn were ever present and went on to play many years together. George Graham argued that fans would rather see the team win than be exciting. Anyway they were actually winners by 5-0, 6-1 and 4-0 twice, 4-1 twice, so they couldn't have been that boring ! It was 0-0 against Spurs in both League matches, though, so perhaps that started it !!!!

I'm sorry I don't know who 'the ledge' is.
Was that fast enough ? I hope so (... Bjorn replied that it was, so that's ok !)

Scott Foss writes

Hi I was wondering if you could tell me what Les Green the former goalkeeper
of
Derby County is doing now...This is a great website (just thought I would
give that a mention) With thanks Scott Foss

Les left English football in 1970-71 season to play in South Africa. As a goalkeeper who was only 5 foot, 8 3/4 inches tall he always gave me hope that shorties like me could play in goal...

http--www.askgreaves.com- says that later Les went into Non-League football with Nuneaton Borough, Hinkley Town, Tamworth and Bedworth.

Check Les's career details at Soccer-Files.com - Les Green

Jason Williams asks

hi
a couple of years ago I won a a replica number 10 shirt (1966 kit), it was
signed by
Geoff Hurst. how much do you think it would be worth?

Hi Jason,

Well I'm not really a person who  knows values of things, but Geoff's
signature on a piece of paper can fetch up to forty pounds so on a replica
England shirt it must be worth more.

Shame it's a replica, a real shirt would make it worth thousands !

My advice to anyone wanting to find out a value of items is to go to the
auction sites listed at
Links: Commercial you'll soon see a similar item and get a
good idea of it's value.

I would hold on to it for now, it'll be worth a lot more to your
grandchildren than you as long as the ink doesn't fade !

Ray/ Deynadance    wrote to me twice about Tony Book (Manchester City)

You missed out Bath City in your playing record. Allison (Manchester City coach) signed him from Bath to Plymouth and then again from City

You are right of course, the book I got the clubs from only covered League
appearances.

I have often thought I ought to cover ALL clubs to be more complete. My
trouble is that if I did it for one person, I would have to do it for
everybody and I don't know everybody's non-League appearances. Now your mail is on the site at least everyone will know about Tony Book.

Thanks for responding. Tony Book actually played against Francis Lee (
Manchester City) when Lee played for Bolton. Allison was Bath City's manager at the time. So Tony was with Malcolm at three clubs.

Regards

Ray

That's incredible isn't it ?It reminds me of John McGovern (
Derby County), whom Brian Clough (Derby County manager) bourght about 4 times, I think.

Stuart Barstow asks

Where are they now ? :Jan Peters of Holland - scored twice v England Feb 1977 - perhaps you have a way of finding out?
cheers
Stuart Barstow

I have to admit I don't know - does anyone else ?

Good site, brings back a lot of memories, if you could get an back issue of the B'ham Evening Mail on the day that We beat the blues in the 1968 cup semi-final you will see me on the back page.   Robin, life long ALBION SUPPORTER

Albion Rovers ???. (Only joking) I've asked Robin to send the picture if he has it, but no news yet. Thanks for the compliments on the site.

Joseph Smith asked

Hi Can you tell me whether Ivor Allchurch WAS the first Welsh soccer player to reach the 50 cap milestone? hope you can help. Thanks joe(bury fc supps assc)

Yes, he was - followed by Cliff Jones. Joseph very politely replied with thanks - I always appreciate it when people do that !

W.Wing very simply asked

Dear Bob
did George Graham ever play for Man United?

Yes he did from 1972-74.
For more details see
www.soccer-files.com- George Graham

Carmel Farrugia rather obscurly asked...

I would like to find the name for the above subject.  I have researched the
Internet and the BBC site to no avail.  Could you possibly help.

I appreciate your prompt reply.

Yours sincerely,

Carmel Farrugia

Not a lot to do with 1970-71 Footballers this but I reckon she's after Sharron Davies, don't you ? David Wilkie and June Croft have been known to commentate, too, I think.

Jelle Vanhijfte has been corresponding maily about Clyde Best. Jelle published an article in the Dutch magazine 'Johan' of which more later. In the meantime here's a picture Jelle sent - not of Clyde Best ...

Philip Blundell writes

I have about 36 editions of charles buchans football monthly dating from 1964 to 1868. They are of great sentimental value to me and I dont think that this journal has ever been beaten. Consequently I would never sell them but I am intrigued as to their value. Any ideas? Most are in v good condition.

Again I would refer you to Links: Commercial ... but if you ever want to retire them to another good home ...

I'm not an expert at these things by any means, but whenever these magazines are sold on the internet auction sites they get a reasonable price, say about 2-3 pounds each, sometimes more.

They are more valuable if they are editions such as the World Cup month - possibly even up to a tenner or more, or feature George Best (again 10+ pounds), that sort of thing.

It also helps if they are in a binder, or are in a good run of editions- that is without numbers missing, but people do get a good price when they sell them individually.

It's not likely that you'll get as much as that from a dealer, however, though they do take away all the hassle of trying to advertise etc.

Good condition magazines are quite well sought after and I reckon will continue to go up in value, and due to having the years around the World Cup I would look after them.
