FKS 1970-71 - Chelsea

Chelsea
with the F.A. Cup 1970
Chelsea came into the 1970-71 season as F.A.Cup holders.
They had snatched victory from Leeds after extra time in
a thrilling replay at Old Trafford. This win reversed
their Cup Final defeat to Spurs in 1967, and the team
went on to win their first European trophy, the Cup
Winner's Cup, in 1970 -71.
This along with the
League Cup win in 1965 show that this was a golden era
for Chelsea, but there was a sense that the team never
fully exploited it's potential. Teams always seemed to
break up at the point when it should have been maturing,
and by the mid-Seventies and Eighties, the club straddled
between the top two divisions with uncertainty.
The set of players
here contains three future managers who tried to restore
the club to the success they had enjoyed themselves:
Eddie McCreadie, John Hollins, and David Webb. Only John
Hollins succeeded - winning the Full Members' Cup in 1986
... OK so he failed, too.
Arsenal v Chelsea in
1974-75 season was my very first ever game. I wanted
Arsenal to win because my sister, Elise, used to tease me
relentlessly that she was a Chelsea fan. And the game
Dixon (see The Kerry Dixon Homepage) scored a hatrick against Leeds
to secure promotion to the top division in 1984, was the
closest I've been to being a victim to football violence.
But any Leeds fan who remembers this Seventies era will
consider the Chelsea game a Cup Final re-match, hence I
now hold a grudging respect for the club.
In recent years
Chelsea have finally superceded the success of this 70s
side. There was the European Cup Winners' Cup win in
1998, the Super Cup in 1999, the FA Cup wins in 1997 and
2000, and the League Cup win in 1998. But it is the new
found wealth of Roman Abramovich, which has seen Chelsea
become the new Man U.
Fifty years after the
first League Championship win the club won back to back
Premiership titles in 2005 and 2006, reached back to back
Champions League Semi Finals in 2004 and 2005, and are
now the favourites to win every competition they enter.
So far though, the only the only double they have won is
the League and League Cup in 2005.
