| Bob 70-71 | Click to see Bobby Moore as Captain Bobby Moore at West Ham United See The Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK Bobby Moore was the first captain of England I knew. He was an older brotherly figure through my childhood and he personified captaincy for me. He was solid, reliable, classy and a winner. And though I was too young to remember him holding up the World Cup in 1966 as the England captain, images of the event were so a part of my upbringing, in my mind it rated alongside Neil Armstrong's moon walk in order of outstanding world achievements by an individual. He was the captain of England's 1970 World Cup defence, too, but disaster struck in 1974, when Bobby's England couldn't even qualify for the finals. Bobby held the record of 108 England caps when he was finally dropped for good (a record now held by Peter Shilton), and an era of English football passed forever.
Bobby Moore at West Ham - with the FA Cup in 1964(Thanks to Billy Green for sending this picture) From then on he rather curiously turned up in the 1975 F.A.Cup final playing for Fulham as they lost to the team for which he will be forever linked, West Ham United, and as the websites's mate, Jim Ross (see News September 5th 1999 and October 6th, 1999) will confirm, Bobby did a stint in the mid-seventies North American League - NASL. Sadly died, and has since had the very rare honour of appearing on a UK Royal Mail stamp (- rightfully the 26p first class stamp ! ).
